If you've ever stepped outside into real cold, the kind that truly stings your face, you already know what it does to your skin. It ends up tight and at worst, flaking.
We know it better than most. Svalr is made in Longyearbyen, the world's northernmost town, where we formulate skincare in small batches against one of the harshest climates on Earth. We like to say that skincare that works here, will work great everywhere.
Why cold weather is hard on your skin
Your skin's outer layer, the barrier, is what keeps water in and irritants out. Cold and dry air works against it on every front. Low humidity pulls moisture out of the skin. Wind strips it faster. Indoor heating also contributes to the damage, as it dries out the air inside as well.
The result is a barrier that's working overtime. Water escapes faster than your skin can replace it, and once that happens you get the familiar chain reaction: tightness, then flaking, then redness and sensitivity that seem to appear out of nowhere.
The instinct is usually to scrub harder or pile on a heavy cream. Unfortunately both tend to backfire. What a stressed barrier actually needs is fewer harsh ingredients, smarter hydration, and a routine simple enough that you'll actually stick to it through a dark, cold season.
Which is the whole idea behind Svalr: a minimal routine built for maximum results.
The essential 3-step skincare routine
We like to say that you can get it all in 3 steps. Cleanse, treat, hydrate.
That's the backbone of a skincare routine that properly protects your barrier.
Step 1 — Cleanse without stripping
Most cleansers leave your face feeling a bit tight, and in cold weather that's the last thing you want. Ren & Pen is our cleanser.
And it does more than "just" cleaning. It contains gentle exfoliating acids, such as lactic acid (an AHA) and willow bark (a BHA), which helps remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, so your skin looks smoother and the products you apply next can actually sink in. Arctic cotton softens and soothes at the same time, so you finish comfortable.
Because those acids can make skin more sun-sensitive, we recommend using Ren & Pen in the evening, or anytime during the dark season. Massage it onto dry skin, then rinse.
Step 2 — Brighten and defend (mornings)
Klar, our lightweight 10% Vitamin C serum, will be your next step.
Vitamin C is one of the most well-studied brightening antioxidants there is, and we've paired it with Arctic cranberry seed oil and cloudberry CO2 to nourish while it works. Used consistently, it helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and dark spots from sun exposure and brings back a more even, radiant complexion.
Apply two to four drops after washing your face with water in the morning. It is normally enough to use just this with no moisturiser to follow up, but if you feel like you need some extra hydration, you can do step 3 in the morning as well!
Step 3 — Hydrate (evenings)
This is the step cold weather will punish you for skipping. Myk — meaning "soft" in Norwegian, is a moisturizer built for strong protection.
It's formulated with bakuchiol, a plant-derived alternative to retinol that helps smooth the look of fine lines without the irritation retinol is known for, which is perfect when your barrier is already stressed by the cold. In addition to that: niacinamide to support the barrier, cloudberry seed oil for antioxidants and elasticity, and chaga mushroom, whose natural beta-glucan helps skin hold onto water instead of losing it to the dry air.
Apply after cleanser at night!
We would usually recommend using Klar Vitamin C alone, with no moisturiser, as that is when it can give the best results possible.
So aim for Klar in the morning and MYK in the evening!
The Arctic ingredients doing the work
We didn't reach for Nordic-sounding ingredients because they photograph well. We use them because plants that survive at 78°N have to be genuinely resilient, and that resilience is exactly what stressed skin needs.
Here are some of our favorites:
Cloudberry seed oil, one of our favorites, rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids that help keep skin elastic and radiant.
Chaga mushroom, a mineral-dense superfood whose beta-glucan helps prevent water loss and boost hydration, for a soft, non-stripped finish.
Bakuchiol, the gentle, plant-based answer to retinol, helping refine fine lines and texture without the usual sting.
Arctic cranberry seed oil & cloudberry CO2, antioxidant-rich botanicals that nourish and restore as they brighten.
Arctic cotton, lactic acid & willow bark, a soften-and-renew trio that exfoliates gently and leaves skin comfortable, never raw.
And just as important, a list of what you won't find: no parabens, no mineral oils, no silicones, no sulfates. We leave out the synthetic additives that only exist to tweak texture, color, or shelf life. Every product is natural, cruelty-free, and packaged to be recycled.
A routine built in the Arctic works everywhere
Here's the quiet promise in all of this. If a routine can hold up through a Svalbard winter, the wind, the cold, the months of dark and desert-dry air, it has more than enough to handle a heated apartment, a long-haul flight, a ski week, or an ordinary January anywhere else in the world.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best skincare routine for cold, dry weather? Keep it simple and barrier-focused: a gentle, non-stripping cleanser, an antioxidant treatment like Vitamin C in the morning, and a protective moisturizer to seal in hydration. Harsh scrubs and stripping foams tend to make winter skin worse, not better.
Should I still use exfoliating acids in winter? Yes, the key is gentle and not too often. Ren & Pen uses mild lactic acid and willow bark to renew skin without harshness. Because acids can increase sun sensitivity, use them in the evening or during darker months. You can also use our face mask "Vinterglød" max once a week for additional exfoliation.
Can I use Vitamin C in the winter? Absolutely. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps brighten and defend against everyday environmental stress year-round.
Is bakuchiol better than retinol for sensitive or cold-stressed skin? Bakuchiol offers many of the smoothing, fine-line benefits associated with retinol, but it's plant-derived and far less likely to irritate, which makes it a smart choice when cold weather has already left your barrier fragile.
Do Arctic-formulated products only work in cold climates? Not at all. A routine built to survive polar conditions is more than capable in milder ones. The same barrier support that helps at 78°N helps in dry heated rooms, on flights, and in any low-humidity environment.
